CFM = 9000
HP = 5.5
The CBA18 5.5HP delivers 9,000 CFM — a 29% increase over the 2HP variant — using the same 18-inch centrifugal housing but a 5.5 HP motor that generates substantially higher static pressure. This unit is the correct specification not just for higher airflow, but specifically for high-resistance exhaust systems: duct networks with long runs, multiple filter stages, activated carbon or HEPA arrestors, or exhaust risers serving multiple floors where cumulative resistance would starve a 2 HP unit below its rated output.
The key differentiator of the CBA18 5.5HP is static pressure, not airflow alone. In a low-resistance duct system, the 2HP variant achieves 7,000 CFM adequately. When the same duct system incorporates a grease filter bank, a UV treatment stage, a carbon filter panel, and a 25-metre vertical riser, the total system resistance may reach 2.0 to 3.0 inches water gauge — a level at which a 2 HP centrifugal drops well below its rated CFM. The 5.5 HP motor maintains 9,000 CFM against this resistance, ensuring the designed ventilation rate is actually achieved rather than just specified on paper.
Typical applications for the CBA18 5.5HP include commercial kitchen exhaust systems with full ecology unit filtration (electrostatic + UV + carbon), centralised exhaust for multiple restaurant tenants on separate floors sharing a single riser, industrial fume extraction systems with in-line scrubbers or multi-stage arrestors, and pharmaceutical or laboratory exhaust where biosafety cabinet exhaust combines with in-duct HEPA filter housings to create high system resistance.
For applications where system resistance is moderate and 7,000 CFM is sufficient, the CBA18 2HP is the lower operating cost option. When exhaust volume requirements exceed 9,500 CFM at moderate static pressure, the CBA20 2HP (8,500 CFM) or CBA20 4HP (10,000 CFM) addresses the next capacity range.
