CFM = 8500
HP = 2
The CBA20 2HP moves 8,500 CFM through a 20-inch centrifugal blower body at 2 HP — higher airflow than the CBA18 5.5HP’s volume but at significantly lower static pressure. It is designed for large-volume exhaust applications with low-to-moderate duct resistance: large open-plan commercial kitchens with short direct duct runs, warehouse ventilation, large retail spaces, and applications where the 20-inch duct connection size is a design requirement rather than a capacity one.
The apparent paradox of the CBA20 2HP — 8,500 CFM at 2 HP versus the CBA18 5.5HP’s 9,000 CFM at 5.5 HP — is explained by static pressure. The CBA20 2HP achieves its 8,500 CFM against low system resistance; as duct resistance increases, its output falls steeply. The CBA18 5.5HP maintains its output at much higher resistance. Specifying the CBA20 2HP saves significantly on motor operating cost when the actual duct system has minimal resistance, but it is the wrong choice for any system with substantial filter arrays, long vertical risers, or multiple direction changes.
At 8,500 CFM, the CBA20 2HP serves large commercial kitchen exhaust in open-plan layouts where the hood connects directly to the fan with a short, straight duct run and minimal filtration, large retail food hall ventilation with open ceiling voids and short duct paths, commercial bakery or confectionery production area exhaust where heat and steam are the primary contaminants and filter stages are minimal, and warehouse smoke dilution ventilation where the low-resistance, high-volume characteristic of the centrifugal impeller is precisely what the application requires.
For high-static-pressure applications requiring 8,000–9,000 CFM, the CBA18 5.5HP is the correct specification. When the application genuinely needs more than 9,500 CFM at moderate-to-high static pressure, the CBA20 4HP (10,000 CFM) provides both higher volume and greater pressure capability.
